I was a Sessional Academic at ANU from 2016-2023, mainly in science communication and adjacent areas e.g. policy, ethics, undergraduate development.
Also as a university worker, I was somewhat of a ‘union hack’ and got heavily involved during and after the COVID-19 induced cuts. I was variously Branch Secretary for the NTEU ANU Branch, National Councillor for the ANU and part of the casual collective ‘CUPUW‘ trying to improve how both Universities and the NTEU treated casual workers (the fact I now work elsewhere is maybe an indication of how well that went…). Leading up to being part of the Bargaining Team for staff in the 2022/23 negotiations for the 2023-2026 EBA, where won a huge slew of improvements to pay and conditions for academics, professionals and casuals.

I ironically but deliberately put myself out of a job. As part of the NTEU Bargaining Team in the ANU EBA negotiations in 2022/23 part of the slew of improved conditions for university workers included a commitment to reduce their reliance on casual/insecure workers and increased wages for those casual workers. Which meant that the casual gigs I’d been doing dried up. Also having quit the PhD and clearly switching career pathways out of academia played a role, ANU was better off investing the time and money in new PhD candidates!
